Program Overview

Driving AI Literacy through project-based learning at Rutgers-Camden.

This is the foundation of the RutgersCamden AI Campus: a team-based, project-driven learning experience where participants explore AI tools, methods, and ethics through interdisciplinary collaboration.
 No prior coding experience is required; curiosity and commitment are the only prerequisites.

Program Highlights

Duration: 8 weeks (March 2 - April 30) 
Time Commitment: 2-3 hours per week 
Who It’s For: Rutgers-Camden undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. 

Program Structure

The program unfolds across three structured stages:

  • Foundation (Weeks 1–2) 
    Participants engage in shared learning through AI literacy workshops, Introduction to tools and models, Ethics & Responsible AI, Problem framing and project selection
  • Project Work (Weeks 3–7)  
    Teams work with mentors and student coaches to explore datasets, build models, conduct analysis, develop storytelling and ethical reflection, and prepare project findings.
  • Showcase (Week 8) 
    All teams present their work at the Rutgers-Camden AI Campus Spring Showcase, featuring faculty, campus leaders, and community partners.
     

Cohort Structure 

Each cohort is interdisciplinary and includes One Faculty Mentor, One Student Coach, Four Student Participants comprising of Technical Lead, Applied Researcher, Analyst, Ethics/Impact Lead

Project Domains include Health AI Projects, Community Impact Project, Business Innovation Projects

The learning model emphasizes BOTH conceptual and technical growth. All participants learn to understand AI models, interpret outputs, develop research questions, assess ethical implications, and communicate insights effectively.

  • Commitment to weekly sessions
  • Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Interest in AI’s role in research or problem-solving
  • Attendance at monthly AI Conversations
  • Participation in the Spring Showcase

Timeline

  • January: Orientation + Foundations
  • February–April: Project work
  • May: Showcase + publication opportunities

Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Gain foundational AI literacy
  • Develop interdisciplinary research skills
  • Create a project portfolio
  • Build leadership experience
  • Present at the Spring Showcase
  • Qualify to coach future cohorts or mentor K–12 students
  • Have opportunities for competition or publication
