The Common Good Lecture is the annual signature lecture of Rutgers University–Camden's Division of Impact and Community Engagement. Each year, the series will bring recognized thinkers, scholars, and public leaders to campus to explore the ideas that strengthen people, communities, institutions, and democracy. Through thoughtful dialogue across disciplines and perspectives, the lecture advances the university's commitment to civic engagement, ethical leadership, public purpose, and the pursuit of the common good.

Kwame Anthony Appiah
“The Ethics of Belonging: Identity, Dialogue and Democratic Life”
Join us as we hear from one of America’s leading public philosophers, Dr. Kwame Anthony Appiah, as he discusses the broader civic and ethical responsibilities of living in a pluralistic society. Dr. Appiah will explore how people can engage across differences with intellectual humility and mutual respect, and how universities can prepare students to navigate disagreement while strengthening democratic institutions. He also will discuss the roles curiosity, dialogue, and ethical reasoning play in building healthier communities and societies.
As a professor of philosophy and law at New York University and as “The Ethicist” for The New York Times Magazine, Dr. Appiah challenges us to look beyond the boundaries – real and imagined – that divide us, and to celebrate our common humanity, all while navigating the complexities of life.
