Celebrate the enchantment of Valentine's Day by immersing yourself in The Triumph of Love, a classic 18th century French romantic comedy by Pierre de Marivaux. This production will open Rutgers University–Camden’s spring theater season in February. The show runs for five performances only in the Walter K. Gordon theater, February 8-11, 2024; performances Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 7:30pm, with matinee performances on Friday, February 9 at 10:00am and Sunday February 11 at 2:00pm.
The Triumph of Love is a delightful comedy that tells the tale of a disguised princess who invades the retreat of a rationalist philosopher who despises love. Amidst the laughter and whimsy, watch as love triumphs, and the princess captures the heart of her prince charming. This heartwarming play promises to set the perfect tone for your Valentine's Day weekend, blending romance and laughter in a captivating theatrical experience.
Describing the play, director Damon Bonetti observes, “At the heart of Marivaux and The Triumph of Love is LOVE. And all the baggage that comes with it: all of the joys, pleasures and good things, but also the terrors, sadness and heartbreak of it all, too. Marivaux wrote in an age of reason and enlightenment and was very much, like Hermocrate in the play, a rationalist himself. In Triumph, Léonide, our princess in disguise, puts men (and women) to the test pitting love against reason. How do they pass this test? How does the rational mind stand a chance against the brutal irrationality of the heart? This is what makes the comedy so beautiful, hilarious, and bittersweet.” Bonetti is the co-founding artistic director of The Philadelphia Artists Collective and a lecturer in theater at Rutgers–Camden.
The cast of Rutgers–Camden students is led by Taylor Eccles of Colonia, NJ as Léonide, Jessica Oscis as Leontine, Ethan Santi of Bellmawr as Dimas, Andy Amezquita of Camden as Agis, Ryan Pletcher of Millville as Hermocrate, Damien Rodriguez of Vineland as Harlequin, and Nayeli DeJesus of Camden as Corine.
