Summary

The Chancellor’s Distinguished Visiting Scholar Grant will provide a residency opportunity for distinguished scholars and artists of exceptional accomplishment to engage our university community and the greater Delaware Valley. The invited scholar must be one who has a distinguished record as a thought leader, nationally and internationally, in any disciplinary area within Rutgers University–Camden. The tenure of the invited guest is determined by the selected academic unit, institute, or center, not to exceed one academic year. The minimum in-residence requirement, however, is two consecutive weeks.

• Distinguished Scholar or Artist: The applicant should possess a distinguished record as a thought leader and be nationally and internationally recognized for their outstanding achievements in any disciplinary area relevant to Rutgers University–Camden. This recognition should be reflected in their substantial contributions to scholarship, research, or creative endeavors.
• Alignment with Academic Disciplines: The applicant's work should align with one or more disciplinary areas within Rutgers University–Camden. Their expertise should complement and enhance the intellectual and creative endeavors of our academic community.
• Residency Commitment: The tenure of the invited guest will be determined by the selected academic unit, institute, or center. While the maximum residency period should not exceed one full academic year, the minimum in-residence requirement is two consecutive weeks. Applicants should be prepared to commit to this in-residence period as part of their engagement.
• Contribution to Intellectual and Creative Community: The applicant should demonstrate a genuine commitment to engaging with the academic and creative community at Rutgers University–Camden and the greater Delaware Valley. This commitment may include participating in scholarly or creative activities, mentoring students, and sharing their expertise with the community through lectures, workshops, or exhibitions.
• Impactful Legacy: Applicants should articulate how their presence as a visiting scholar or artist will leave a lasting impact on the academic and creative environment at Rutgers University–Camden, contributing to the university's mission and enriching the intellectual and cultural vibrancy of the community.

Application Process:

Step 1: Initial Application Submission

Distinguished scholars and artists interested in the program submit their initial applications through an online portal. The application form includes personal information, a curriculum vitae, a statement of purpose, and any supporting documents. Applicants may also work directly with an existing faculty member or division leader to complete the application process.

Step 2: Academic Unit Review

Academic Unit Assessment: Upon receipt of the applications, the relevant academic unit, division, or center reviews the submissions. The unit is responsible for evaluating each applicant's alignment with their academic discipline or creative focus.

Selection Committee: An internal selection committee, including faculty members from the academic unit, is appointed to assess the applicants. The committee considers the applicants' contributions to their field, scholarly or artistic achievements, and potential impact on the Rutgers University–Camden community.

Shortlisting: The selection committee shortlists the most promising candidates and forwards these applications to the Dean of the respective division.

Step 3: Dean's Evaluation and Recommendation

Dean's Review: The Dean of the division in which the academic unit, institute, or center is situated evaluates the shortlisted candidates' applications. The Dean assesses the alignment of the applicants' expertise with the division's goals and the potential for enhancing the intellectual and creative environment.

Interviews (if necessary): The Dean may choose to conduct interviews with the shortlisted candidates to gain a deeper understanding of their proposed engagement and the contributions they can make to Rutgers University–Camden.

Recommendation: Based on the review and interviews (if applicable), the Dean of the division submits a final recommendation to the Chancellor. This recommendation should outline the division's endorsement of the candidate and their anticipated impact on the university community.

Step 4: Selection and Notification

Final Selection: The Chancellor reviews the Dean's recommendations and selects the visiting scholars or artists for the program.

Notification: Applicants are notified of the chancellor’s decision. Successful candidates receive an official invitation to participate in the Chancellor’s Distinguished Visiting Scholar Program.

Step 5: Program Engagement

Visiting Scholar's Engagement: The selected scholars or artists collaborate with Rutgers University–Camden according to the terms of the program, fulfilling their minimum two-week in-residence requirement and actively contributing to the academic and creative community.
