Call for Nominations for Chancellor's Awards for Research and Teaching Excellence

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce the call for nominations for this year’s Chancellor’s Awards that recognize and honor faculty excellence in research and teaching, two important pillars of the Rutgers University–Camden mission.

Chancellor’s Awards for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity

These awards will be given to Rutgers University–Camden faculty who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in research, scholarship, or creative work. Each recipient will receive a $2,000 monetary prize. There are two award categories:

  1. Tenured Awardees (tenured faculty members) – up to two awards
  2. Non-Tenured Awardees (tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty members) – up to three awards

Current full-time faculty members who have served at least three years at Rutgers University–Camden are eligible. Previous recipients are not eligible to receive a second award in the same category. These awards will be given in recognition of works published, performed, or presented within the last three years. Eligible works include books, articles, exhibits, performances, or any other work demonstrating excellence in research or scholarship or creative activity.

The dean of each school will establish a nominee selection process appropriate for their faculty. Taking into consideration the faculty sizes and diversity of disciplines of the schools, business, law, and nursing may each submit one nominee, and arts and sciences may submit three nominees, for each award category. Nomination packets must include the following materials:

  1. A nomination letter (written by the chair of the nominee’s department or the dean of the nominee’s school), no more than two pages in length (double-spaced, 12-point font), summarizing the nominee’s work and rationale for the nomination.
  2. The nominee’s current curriculum vitae.

To give nominations full consideration at the decanal level, they should be received by the dean’s office by Monday, March 20, 2023. In turn, deans should submit their recommended nominees to Michael Palis, interim vice chancellor for research, at palis@camden.rutgers.edu by Monday, April 3, 2023.

Chancellor’s Awards for Teaching Excellence

These awards will be given to Rutgers University–Camden faculty who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and have made extraordinary efforts to enhance student learning. There are five award categories:

  1. The Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence for Tenured and Tenure-Track Faculty is open to full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members at any stage of their career. Up to four faculty members each year may receive this award, each of which comes with a $2,000 monetary prize.
  2. The Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence for Non-Tenure Track Faculty is open to full-time, non-tenure track faculty members.  Up to one NTT faculty member each year may receive this award, which comes with a $2,000 monetary prize.
  3. The Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence for Part-Time Lecturer Faculty is open to part-time faculty members. Up to one PTL each year may receive this award, which comes with a $2,000 monetary prize.
  4. The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Mentoring is open to full-time faculty members.  Up to one faculty member each year may receive this award, which comes with a $2,000 monetary prize.
  5. The Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation is funding the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award, which recognizes excellence throughout a career in teaching. The award comes with a $4,000 monetary prize.  Because it is a lifetime award for excellent teaching, no person can receive it more than once. Previous Chancellor’s Teaching Award winners are eligible for the Lindback Award. Full-time faculty members are eligible for this award.

Nomination packets for these awards should consist of: (1) A letter of nomination from the department chair or a colleague; and (2) Materials from the candidate documenting teaching excellence (a teaching portfolio is the recommended form for these materials).

Letters of nomination should address the following questions: (1) What distinguishes the nominee as an excellent teacher? (2) What distinguishes the nominee from other committed and effective teachers?

It is recommended that the teaching portfolio be prepared according to the instructions included in the university-wide Guidelines for the Evaluation of Effective Teaching: GUIDELINES FOR EVALUATION OF EFFECTIVE TEACHING 2022 6.15.22 (1).pdf (rutgers.edu)  Nominees are encouraged to follow the guidance provided in section 3 (“Teaching Portfolio”) and, in doing so, document their excellence in a subset of the facets of effective teaching outlined in section 1 (“Effective Teaching: Definition”).  For the Excellence in Mentoring Award, the focus should be on #7 (Mentoring).  For the Lindback award, attention to contributions throughout the nominee’s career is appropriate.

Nomination packets should be sent to each dean’s office by Monday, March 20, 2023.  Each unit will determine its own review process and will put forward its strongest nominations to the provost’s office (Naomi Marmorstein, Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs, marmorst@camden.rutgers.edu) by Monday, April 3, 2023.  Each unit may nominate:

  1. Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence for Tenured and Tenure-Track Faculty: up to two from each of Business, Nursing and Law; up to four from Arts & Sciences.
  2. Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence for Non-Tenure Track Faculty, Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence for Part-Time Lecturer Faculty, Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Mentoring, and Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award: for each award, up to one from each of Business, Nursing, and Law; up to two from Arts & Sciences.

Sincerely,

Antonio D. Tillis, Ph.D.
Chancellor
