Bachelor of Arts in Religion
Program Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in Religion at Rutgers University–Camden offers students a broad and interdisciplinary approach to the study of religious traditions, beliefs, and practices across cultures and historical periods. The major requires 30 credits, structured as follows:
- Core Courses (12 credits):
- Introduction to Religious Studies (840:101)
- Introduction to World Religions (840:103)
- Asian Religions (840:111)
- Jews, Christians, and Muslims (840:112)
- Philosophy Requirement (3 credits):
- One course in Philosophy
- Electives (15 credits):
- Five additional Religion courses, with up to two approved courses from other departments if they contain significant religion content.
Students are encouraged to:
- Develop foreign language competence equivalent to intermediate-level study.
- Pursue a strong minor or second major in consultation with their adviser.
- Petition for course substitutions when appropriate.
Dual credit options allow students to count up to three courses toward both a Philosophy and Religion major or minor. Students pursuing majors or minors in other departments (e.g., Political Science) may also count up to three relevant courses toward the Religion major with departmental approval.
