Chancellor’s Grant for Independent Student Research

The Chancellor's Grant for Independent Student Research intends to support student involvement in independent research or creative projects under the direction of a faculty mentor. The program encourages students' experiences in defining objectives and selecting methodologies appropriate for original research or creative projects in their chosen field of study.

Deadline

  • December 2 (Jan-Dec funding)
  • April 28 (July-June funding)

Eligibility

We welcome applications from full- or part-time undergraduate and graduate students. All applicants must have a faculty mentor. If you need assistance finding a faculty member, consult with a faculty member from your area of academic interest or contact the Research Office at Rutgers—Camden. All successful applicants must be willing to present their research or culminating project at Rutgers-Camden Research Week in April 2024.

Project Period

Students will have up to 12 months from the award date to use their funding. After 12 months, unused funding will be forfeited. During the 12-month period, any significant changes to the original research or project proposal must be approved, first by your faculty mentor and then by the Manager of Special Projects and Initiatives. Unapproved changes may result in loss of grant funds.

Budget Guidelines

Grant funds may be used to purchase approved supplies and equipment, compensate research participants, access research materials such as archives, and fund approved travel and conference attendance. All expenses must be incurred within the project period and must not exceed the awarded amount. Grants may not be used to fund salary, tuition, books, transcription services or costs unrelated to the project.

Upon completion of the project, materials and supplies become the property of the academic department of the faculty mentor. Prior approval is required for any variation to the approved project or budget. Students will be responsible to ensure that the actual expenditures meet the proposed budget.

For travel reimbursement guidelines please see the Procedures for Requesting Reimbursement.

      • Statement of the problem to be studied or creative focus of the project
      • Specific aims of the project or creative work

      • Brief overview of the relevant research that informs the subject
      • Explanation of the methodology to be employed
      • Timeline for completion of the project
      • Expected outcomes for the project

  2. Upon submission, the faculty advisor will verify the students’ application and write a letter of support.
