Camden, NJ – May 4, 2026: Rutgers University–Camden will welcome media entrepreneur and executive producer Travis Mitchell for a special screening of the Emmy-nominated documentary, “Becoming Thurgood: America’s Social Architect,” on May 9 at 5:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Rutgers–Camden Campus Center, located at 326 Penn Street, Camden, NJ.

The event, sponsored by the Rutgers–Camden NAACP Chapter and the Camden County East Branch of the NAACP, will feature a screening of the film followed by a live discussion with Mitchell, offering attendees an opportunity to explore the creative vision behind the project and its contemporary relevance.

“Becoming Thurgood: America’s Social Architect,” examines the life and enduring legacy of Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and a pivotal figure in the American Civil Rights Movement. Through archival footage, personal reflections, and historical analysis, the film traces Marshall’s rise from his education at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania to his groundbreaking legal work with the NAACP, including his role in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision.

Mitchell, founder of HBCU Week NOW and senior vice president and chief content officer for Maryland Public Television, is a leading voice in public media storytelling, with a focus on elevating the history and impact of historically Black colleges and universities. His work spans documentary production, digital media, and educational initiatives that center African American experiences and contributions.

The screening and discussion aim to foster dialogue around social justice, legal advocacy, and the ongoing pursuit of equity—issues that remain deeply relevant today.

This event is free and open to the public. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are encouraged to attend, however, registration is required, via this link.
